EVALUATION QUESTION 3
HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
Our main task is a social realism short film, which delves deep into the mindset of the everyday male. Combined with our ancillary tasks of a film poster and also a review of the film, it helps us to gain awareness towards our movie, and also show small elements of the plot without giving anything away. On our ancillary tasks, we stuck to many different conventions of the social realism genre, as popular posters within the same genre all include the protagonist being the main focal point of the image. This allows the viewer to pinpoint the main character just by looking at the poster, which is effective as we have also used an unknown actor, so people would stay to find out who the actor is or what the film may be about. Lots of elements such as the actor's and casts names at the bottom, paired with the social media images and branding of the film are also very effective as the not only gain awareness of the film due to the pages on social media sites, but also gain awareness for the company as a whole, so the name may be more well known. By adding reviews from different viewers of the site, it allowed us to put honest reviews onto the poster to give the audience an accurate representation of how good our film is. This is commonly done in movie posters, as the higher the star rating on the poster, the more intrigued people may be to watch the film or even purchase it. By using a bright, colourful image on the poster, it grabs the attention of viewers. For example, if the advert were to be seen on a bus or a billboard, the bright colours would make it stand out above your average film poster, meaning more people may see it as they are passing-by and pay more attention to it. Once the attention of the viewer has been grabbed, the large, bold, white text against the colourful background stands out making it easy to read from a distance. This is effective because it means that even if people were to rush past the poster, they may be able to make out the name of the film and therefore could later go online to view the poster or even the movie itself. The film review gives honest opinions about the movie with star ratings of the film which allows the demographic to read the review before the movie in order to get an opinion on whether or not they should be watching it.
